Water heaters consist of the following parts (failure of which requires a new heater);
- An inner tank holds the hot water.
- A dip tube allows cold water to enter the tank.
- An exit pipe allows hot water into the home.
- Heating coils heat the water.
- A thermostat controls water temperature.
- A pressure relief valve keeps the tank from exploding (as water heats, it expands).
- A sacrificial anode minimizes tank corrosion.
- A drain valve provides a drainage path for the tank.
- Lagging/Insulation surrounding the tank for energy conservation.
- There is something wrong with the heating element, thermostat, etc.
- Your water heater is too small for your use.
- You're consuming too much hot water (ie. long showers, etc.).
